The 1968 Olympic took place in Mexico City and was called Games of the XIX Olympaid. At thr end of the 200 meter race Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fist up with their black gloves on while the National Anthem was being played. They did this to bring attention to black in the U.S. The Olympic plays no part in politics so when they did that they crossed the line.10 days before the olympics police shot into a crowd of unarmed students.
With Tommie Smith and John Carlos doing what they did it showed a political side which athletes aren't supposed to do. Just by them putting their fist up to represent black people in the U.S. That one action that they did was political use and that this picture of them will always be out there for people to see.
I disagree with "Sport is pure and devoid of political interference" because no matter what they try to do politics always get mixed in with sports. As well with the athletes they may be into politics so they may want to express themselves when they get a chance to be in front of people or the media in order let their voices be heard.

I definitely agree that what the two athletes did was disrespectful and they probably should not have raised their fists like that. However this was a time of extreme discrimination in our country and if I were in their shoes I might have done the same thing. It is hard for me to criticize someone for fighting for what they believe in and doing anything to support their beliefs, even if it means being disrespectful because like I said, if I were in their situation I could see myself raising a fist as well.
