Final Reflections

I'm a athlete so before taking this class I feel like i just looked at the sports that are the biggest like football, basketball, UFC, and other sports like that. I didn't really pay attention to women's sports and how things go with that and this class opened my eyes to a lot of new ways to look at our sports world. That definitely has changed because I'm not focused on the usual things that us as a society has made as our mainstream biggest sports, I look at different sports and give it just as much attention as I do with basketball or football. A few things that stood out for me was people with disabilities being able to compete with normals athletes, I mean I saw it in the olympics but I never really gave it any thought until we hit the topic in class. The way they put females through sex test in order for them to compete in the olympics was pretty crazy to me. The fact that the olympics are so big you don't really hear about that unless things hit the fan. Another things is how we explode our women athletes in magazines and in commercials is crazy and I'm so used to the norms to were I never really gave it any thought. The women athletes some of them are fine with it like the NASCAR driver said sex sells and if thats going to bring in more money for her, she's fine with it. That goes to show you that not just men but the women have begun to except these social norms. After taking this class I will continue to look into topics differently wondering why are things this way etc. I'm pretty sure I will be able to use everything we did in this class to look more in-depth and critically think about the things going on in todays sports. If you are into sports or want to learn more about sports this is the class to be in, we went over so much that me as a athlete never even thought about so yes I would recommend this class to friends.

Why the 'Mans Mans' Game is an Insult to Men

When watching Training Rules we saw that coming out of the closet is one of the hardest things to do because you are surrounded by mostly straight men. So when putting it out there that your are a homosexual on that team and in the locker room mostly everyone looks at you different including the coaches no matter how much of an impact you have on a team. A lot of men are uncomfortable with being in a locker room with a man that is homosexual knowing that they are showering and changing their clothes in front of him. The case where the Missouri football player entering the draft and coming out to the world that he was gay it changed his draft stock from being in the first round to the second or third round. This worries teams because there are players that just don't like gay people and teams feel that it will mess up the chemistry by making them deal with that. For right now the tough contact sports are no safe places for LGBT athletes because other players don't want them touching the or anything of that sort. I feel that we as a culture should except people as they are and not think about a person being gay.
